Landlords and Tenants

Landlords and Tenants

When you rent a home or an apartment, you are a tenant (a renter). If you own a home or apartment and you rent it to someone else, you are a landlord. Both tenants and landlords have to follow the laws about renting. There is a department of the government of BC that is responsible for making sure landlords and tenants follow these laws. It is called the Residential Tenancy Branch.

Before you rent a place, it is important find out what the law says. You can get free information from the Residential Tenancy Branch and the Tenant Resource & Advisory Centre.
