The Court Information Program for Immigrants (CIPI) eliminates language and cultural barriers and enhances access to the courts and to justice for immigrants and refugees. This is accomplished by providing information and referrals to the public, immigrants and refugees appearing in court as the accused, victims, witnesses, or parties involved in a civil suit.
Services are provided in Chinese, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Hindi and Spanish.
Our Court Workers:
- Explain the documents associated with court
- Help clients understand the legal terms of the justice system
- Assist clients with court appearance process and court application
- Provide clients with information on criminal, civil, youth and traffic court structure and procedures
- Show clients the courtroom and explain the roles of court personnel
- Provide emotional support to clients
- Provide pamphlets about the court system in Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish, Hindi and Punjabi
- Facilitate educational workshops with community groups
- Educate justice system personnel about language and cultural differences
- Refer clients to and accept clients from government, non-government organizations and community agencies for additional and specialized assistance
- Accompany and assist clients in the legal aid application process
They do not give legal advice, nor serve as interpreters, nor act as advocates for the client.
